Portable vs Standby Generators
For Backup Power!

It’s important to understand the differences between portable vs standby generators to insure you purchase the unit that will serve your purposes best after losing power. Discovering your system is not large enough when the lights are out is not a good way to evaluate your needs.

Portable vs Standby Generators

There are two basic styles of generators used to supply backup power supplies. The portable generator can be stored and then pulled out on an as-needed basis. The standby generators are hard wired into your home or business and are always on “standby” for duty. That is the basic difference between the two styles, but there are more.

Consider the differences between the generator types and then review your particular needs. The generator that can fulfill most of your power supply needs within your budget is the one for you.

Portable Generators on the Go!

The portable generators are just that – portable. They can be stored and then pulled out of storage as needed. They run on fuel stored in the generator’s fuel tank. There are electrical outlets on the generator so you can plug in essential appliances using extension cords.

The generators that are portable are smaller than standby generators and can’t supply as much power. On the other hand, they are also less expensive. When shopping for a portable generator consider the following.

  • Can you easily start the unit? Does it use a recoil? Do you need a battery powered ignition instead?

  • How many power outlets does the unit have and is it enough to handle your most important power needs?

  • How much fuel does the tank hold? Is it enough to make the generator useful during a typical area power outage?

  • What features does the generator have that makes it particularly suitable including portability, ease of maintenance and ease of use?

Standby Generators Always Ready for Duty!

Standby generators are always ready to get to work because they are connected to a permanent gas line or large propane tank or line used by the residence or business. The generator is then hardwired to the residence or business power supply system. So in essence, this type of generator has a permanent fuel source and is ready to start working when your home or business loses power.

The standby generator will recognize when power is lost and then kick in after an automatic transfer switch is activated. When the normal power supply is restored, the transfer switch will disconnect and your home or business goes back to using its normal power supply.

The features you should consider when shopping for a standby generator include the following.

  • Ability to withstand the roughest weather

  • Ease of maintenance

  • Ability to run a test cycle when system is not needed

  • Dependability

  • Noise level when system is running

  • Meets emission standards and local codes relative to this type of installation

  • Safety features including automatic shut-off

Your generator can be on the go or standing still! The differences between portable vs standby generators are significant, and that’s why it’s important to thoroughly understand them before making a decision. If you are in the market for a generator, there are great choices available to meet all needs.
