Residential Standby Generators
DO Like Interruptions!

Residential standby generators simply don’t like interruptions…power interruptions that is. Or maybe we should say they do like interruptions because it means it’s time to go to work. The reason they are called “standby” units is because these generators only start working when the permanent power supply in your home is interrupted.

Residential Standby Generators

The call to duty for the standby units is when the monitoring unit on the generator detects that the flow of electricity through the automatic transfer switch has stopped. The generator will wait approximately 100 seconds to make sure this is not just a temporary glitch.

If the power remains off after the 10 seconds, the generator controller will then send a signal that starts the generator. It is the automatic transfer switch (ATS) that closes the permanent power supply line and then opens the line that enables generator voltage to power the residence. The ATS works in reverse when utility power is restored.

Switching to Power!

The Generac home generator systems or residential standby generators are typical of the residential backup power units in some ways. But Generac ATS constantly monitors the utility power so that you are never without power for more than half a minute at the most. Even the lower end units are upper scale when it comes to features like quiet smooth operation and automatic transfer switches.

But Generac offers other features too. For example, you can have the standby unit installed so that only certain circuits are powered during an outage as opposed to the whole house. You can also establish a circuit priority when you have whole-house coverage so that certain appliances will be shut off in order to insure power is maintained for essential services.

When shopping for generators that use the automatic transfer switch, it is important to know that the unit components were designed to be seamless. In other words, the ATS switch should be specifically designed to integrate with the generator. That is how a dependable unit is created.

Customize Your Generator

Not all generators are made equal. There are plenty of options available, but the best advice you will get is to buy the upper end model that fits your budget. Brands like Generac offer many different series of generators for residential use so that you can choose the options that best fit your lifestyle and needs. The ability to customize your generator through the choice of the ATS and watts is a true benefit. You can get the most generator for the money by selecting certain features.

Losing power to your house any time of year is disruptive, but it can be especially dangerous in the winter. Fortunately there are residential standby generators to fit almost any size house and any type of power need. It’s comforting to know that life doesn’t have to stop in your home just because the power did.
